Research universities lobby chancellor for deep sector reforms - Research Professional News - MK体育APP

Ten research-focused universities have called for a “new compact” for higher education in the UK that rewards commercialisation and collaboration while protecting discovery-based research. In a letter to the chancellor John Healey ahead of next week’s budget, published on 19 October, the ResearchPlus group—whose members include Sussex University, Soas University of London and the Open University—have called for widescale higher education funding reforms in response to the pressures the sector is under. “That compact should foster a vibrant environment for research and innovation, rewarding institutions with a track record of commercialisation and collaboration, including with SMEs, and protecting funding for fundamental discovery-based research,” the letter states. The letter, signed on behalf of the ResearchPlus universities by the group’s director, Johnny Rich, and its co-chairs Sasha Roseneil and Andrew Jones says: “In this month’s budget, there is an opportunity to support growth driven by innovation and opportunity, or—by doing nothing to support the higher education sector—to undermine it.”.
